400 Years of Festivities at the Geffrye Museum

Art and Culture

I don’t know about you but it’s so easy to get enveloped in your own Christmas traditions; wrapping presents while watching Elf, stressing out over the perfect Christmas spread and pulling out those itchy festive jumpers to re-enact the prize family photo that you take every year. Well, with a little help from the Geffrye Museum, you can travel back in time to experience over four centuries of English Christmas traditions.

This exhibition of Christmases past has been a successful display at this museum for 25 years and has become a seasonal ritual in itself for many. Traditional rooms throughout the museum are dressed up for the occasion to portray different periods of time throughout English history and how Christmas was once celebrated and enjoyed. Prepare yourself for a multitude of merry and marvellous decorations, stealing a kiss from that special someone under the mistletoe and observing some of the charming games and sumptuous treats that were a must at Christmas time many moons ago.

This exhibition at Geffrye Museum is particularly special this year as it marks the last one for two years while the museum undergoes some redevelopment. With free entry and showing until 7th January, there is no excuse for not transporting yourself back in time to enjoy eras upon eras of magical Christmas cheer.
